My Dearest Maidie:

I haven’t done a thing to-day but work and in odd minutes shine my equipment. They are hell on shining here – just as much so as in Rouen only here there is so much more to do. I have never bothered about anything but my buttons and shoes but to-day I got the hunch that it would look better if the whole works were shined. And it is an enormous chore. Mine was terribly dirty when it was issued and has not improved any since I got it. I put in quite a time on it to-day but its far from finished. Turkey says the rifles, bombs etc. will never beat Fritz  the only way is to dazzle him into submission. Turkey is very funny and very adequate. He has all the work down cold and is invaluable. Also he is very funny. Tonight I had my supper with Hervey Glenn. Here I get my meals with the Transport and Glennie and I sat against an old wagon wheel and had a good old jape. He has had some experiences a solid year in the line as a machine gunner – No. 1 on a gun on three different occasions the other three of his crew were knocked out but Glennie never collected even a scratch. He is just the same, always smiling and always the merry little twinkle in his eyes.

Dearest I adore you aujourd’hui. I just want you more and more every day. I am awfully lucky in having you for my wife and having you love me but I am the unluckiest mortal in the world being away from you. You Baby, I want you every minute. I think of you always

Your own

I’ve been trying to figure out how they arrive at the word “aujourd’hui
Au jour de hui – what is hui? Can you thrown any light on it? Ross
